Backups protect investments

You have invested a lot in site design and development and your site isn’t static. Changes happen all the time in the form of customer orders, blog entries, user changes, site updates, and more.  It can be costly for an organization to lose this investment.

Data loss can happen for a number of reasons. Here are a few scenarios:

  • Someone accidentally deletes an important part of the site
  • Ex-employee or business partner deletes everything intentionally
  • Accounting forgets to pay for hosting and site is deleted
  • Hosting company has server or hard disk failure
  • Malware infects site and corrupts database
  • and more…

About backups

Hosting providers often claim to include backups with your hosting account. You might even pay extra with this service and that is great. However, have you ever seen the backup? How long will it take to get a copy of your site to your web developer?  Can you access the backup without having to contact the host?

Our backups supplement hosting backups and provide readily available copies of the site files and database. The files are copied into your hosting account and uploaded to report server. You will be given FTP access to this server so you or your Web professional may access your backup at any time.

Vocabulary

Frequency: This is how often a backup is executed. Deciding on the frequency is as simple as asking how many days could you afford to lose. For example, a site that is updated monthly can get away with a monthly backup. A site that has daily transactions should be backed-up daily.

Revisions: This is how many versions of the backups are saved on the server at a time. This can be useful if you would like to roll-back a change.

Off-Site Storage: A copy of the site is saved on our remote server and likely a different data center than your site.

Remote Access: We provide self-serve access to our remote server via FTP so that you or your Web professional can access it at any time.

About Maintenance

As I mentioned above, your site is dynamic. Besides the changes being made to the content and design of your site, WordPress and the third-party plugins release updates, bug fixes, security patches, and roll out new features.

The most important aspect of keeping these plugins up-to-date with the most current stable release is the security aspect.

Vocabulary

Security Scan: Monthly we run the site through a security scan to check for malaware or link injections that may not be obvious but could be doing harm to your online reputation or cause data loss.

Database Optimization: Your site’s database will build up overhead that slows down your website and compromises performance. By clearing this overhead, we can keep the database lean and operating faster.

Uptime Monitoring: Every site experiences downtime at some point. We can get alerted when your site is offline so that we can follow-up with the host quickly to get the site back online faster.

SPAM Folder Cleanup: Often times the spam folder collects a large amount of entries. We can clear this folder monthly to lighten the database.

Post Revision Cleanup: Everytime a page or post is changed, WordPress saves the old copy just in case you want to revert back to a previous version. These revisions add up fast and we can purge these revisions to further lighten the database.

Plugin Updates: As stable releases are available, we can update them to be sure you get the latest security patches, bug fixes, and features.

WP Core Updates: Just like plugins, WordPress provides updates. However, many recent versions have an auto-update feature. This is not necessary for all sites.

Note: Maintenance beyond basic updates; including plugin conflicts may be required. Service does not include backup recovery if required. These services are charged hourly and an estimate of total cost is always available upon request.
