Using Whiteboard Animation to Sell – and Educate – the Tandem Diabetes Way

Why use a whiteboard animation video to educate people about diabetes and diabetes-related issues?

Well, according to the CDC, in the United States…

  1. Over 34,000,000 people have diabetes. 1 in 5 of them are un diagnosed.
  2. More than 88 million US adults—over a third—have prediabetes, and more than 84% of them don’t know they have it.

Around 210,000 of those cases are children and teenagers under the age of 20 years old. (https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/284974)

Tandem Diabetes, inventors of the T Slim x2 Insulin Pump, recognize that those 210,000 thousand individuals have trouble reading about best practices. They probably don’t even have the time to think about reading them in the first place.

So, to help the fifth of America affected by diabetes every day, they contracted with Rip Media Group to create a short series of explainer videos. Those videos use whiteboard animation to highlight who they are, what makes them different, and how they will be changing kids’ lives.

You can watch the series intro below.

How to Make a Whiteboard Video That Converts

Tandem Diabetes’s ultimate goal was to make a series of videos that the younger sections in the diabetes community would want to watch. Their goal was to take a device used for diabetes and make it fun and relatable to kids.

With that in mind, we pitched a fun, hand-animated talk show concept to Tandem that would use humor and cartoons to appeal to a younger audience. Each video was also tailor-made to develop a wholesome brand identity for Tandem and their x2 pump.

Developing a wholesome brand identity was Tandem’s most significant pain point when they hired us as their whiteboard animation service.

So, as we were making Tandem’s videos, we leaned into the creative, whimsical, and humorous tone that whiteboard videos are so good at.

How to Create a Whiteboard Video That Leaves an Impression

Of course, Tandem’s messaging would have been no good if the kids and parents watching the clips forgot about the x2 pump immediately afterward. So, how did we make this video marketing message impactful, and how did we ensure its message would stick?

We used unique artwork, light-hearted dialogue, and a relatable story to encourage Tandem’s viewers to feel like they were seen and understood.

As countless studies have shown, humor and laughter directly correlate to the formation of memories. There’s even a name for it in the scientific community—The Humor Effect.

How Will Tandem Use Their New Whiteboard Animation Video?

Tandem plans to get their new two video series up onto their website, onto social media, and in front of as many people as possible!
